Practical Statistics and Models to Understand Vector-Borne Diseases: A Two-Day Workshop

February 8-9, 2018

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, College of Veterinary Medicine

This workshop will provide an overview of statistics and models specific to vector-borne diseases. Public health, mosquito, and vector control personnel often need to address the quantitative side of questions related to vector-borne diseases, but for many people, formal course work in statistics was many years ago. On top of that, models designed to understand and predict patterns of risk can seem too abstract or technical to have practical application. This workshop provides conceptual insights, essential technical skills, and examples of practical applications to improve participants’ ability to:

  • Describe the distribution of infections in people, vectors, or animal hosts across different times and places
  • Create and interpret maps and graphs
  • Develop and understand outcomes from causal, statistical, and dynamic models
  • Understand limitations of diagnostic outcomes, measurement, and model prediction.

The workshop will be built around a set of modules arranged by topic. Each module includes short lectures, an applied exercise, and discussion. The exercises will use a combination of Excel and free software. Exercises and examples will all focus on applications of concepts related to vector borne diseases.

Module Topics:

  • Means, standard deviation, statistical distributions
  • Visualizations across time and space
  • Rates and risks
  • Causal relationships
  • Models demystified
  • Assessing diagnostic tests
  • A practical exercise to respond to a vector-borne disease outbreak

Registration: Click here to register.  The registration fee is $25 and the deadline to register is January 9th, 2018.

Schedule: The workshop will run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm on Thursday, Feb. 8 and from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 9.  A more detailed schedule will be available closer to Feb. 8.

Location: The workshop will take place in room 1261 of UIUC's College of Veterinary Medicine Basic Science Building (VMBSB), 2001 South Lincoln Ave., Urbana, IL 61802.

Accommodations, food, and parking: Attendees are responsible for their own lodging and food.  As of 11/9/17, workshop organizers are working on booking blocks of rooms in two area hotels -- please check back for details.  In general, there are many hotels and restaurants in Champaign-Urbana that are within short driving distance of the workshop.  Attendees can park at meters on the east and south sides of the College of Veterinary Medicine Basic Science Building for $1 hour and can use the online Pay By Phone tool to pay for parking.
